NIGEL SHORT CHESS SOCIETY
The NSCS meets at the McCloud Centre at Fettes on a Thursday from 5:30-7pm on most days within term dates. The club is a mix of Fettes students and children from around Edinburgh. Children from more than ten schools meet once a week for a mixture of friendly play and light coaching from Grandmaster Jacob Aagaard and local top player, Andrew Green.
The club receives a generous donation from the Landsberg Foundation and is for this reason free to attend. The only requirements are that the participant is old enough to behave and young enough to go to school, as well as able to play chess and interested in the game (we do not have the resources to deal with children that cannot play or with children that are disproportionately disruptive). We have participants that are complete beginners and we have some of the best players in Edinburgh in their age group. It is a very inclusive environment.
Our atmosphere is relaxed. We do not care if the children have to leave early, arrive late or miss a session or two. The only thing we do not approve of is if they are picked up late, as we want to go home after the sessions are done.
To participate, please contract Gemma Gray at Fettes at G.Gray@fettes.com.
The Tiger Cubs were established by the Edinburgh Chess Club to meet the demand for chess coaching for younger players who are showing either particular talent or enthusiasm for chess. The club has up to 20 places a year for children of school age.
There are no fees payable however attendees must become junior members of the club - membership is currently £20 annually.
Coaching is held in term time on Tuesday evenings from 6.30 to 7.30 at the Edinburgh Chess Club premises at 1 Alva St Edinburgh, City of Edinburgh EH2 4PH 0131 220 6073.
